Vodafone UK has announced that it's promoting social location service Foursquare on its MyWeb and Vodafone live! portals.

Customers can also text FOURSQUARE to the shortcode 97886 to be sent a link to the service's mobile site.

Is this really a big deal? After all, Foursquare's mobile site exists already, and any Vodafone customer with an internet-capable handset can visit it by typing m.foursquare.com into their browser.

Well, it's still a pretty big deal for Foursquare in terms of promotion, and Vodafone putting its service in front of millions of people who don't read the kind of websites (including ME) who've been banging on about the service for months.

Foursquare's popularity may be based on its iPhone, Android and BlackBerry apps, but if more operators like Vodafone start promoting the WAP version, it could speed its crossover to a more mainstream audience.
