IDC reveals ten best-sellers for the final quarter of 2009

Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve range was the best-selling smartphone of Q4 2009 in the US, according to new estimates published by IDC.

It beat out the iPhone 3GS and Motorola's Droid in the chart, which is based on the number of 'converged mobile devices' shipped to vendors, rather than full consumer sales.

The full list:

1. BlackBerry Curve
2. iPhone 3GS
3. Motorola Droid
4. iPhone 3G
5. BlackBerry Pearl
6. BlackBerry Bold
7. BlackBerry Storm
8. Palm Pre
9. BlackBerry Tour
10. myTouch 3G

A good quarter for Research In Motion, then, although Motorola, Verizon Wireless and Google will be chuffed with the high placement of the Droid.

We're a little uneasy about the methodology - why are the various BlackBerry Curves lumped together, but not the two iPhones, for example?

Even so, the chart still offers a good picture of what's selling Stateside when it comes to smartphones.

Last week, IDC published its estimates for the overall smartphone market in 2009, claiming that globally, 174.2 million devices shipped during the year.
