WebGL to enable hardware-accelerated mobile web games

Although that's just one step along the way

Mobile games developers are buzzing about the increasing number of handsets featuring the OpenGL ES 2.0 technology for hardware acceleration.

iPhone has recently been joined by the Nokia N900, Sony Ericsson Satio and BlackBerry Storm 2, sparking the development of more graphically rich downloadable games.

What about mobile web apps and games though? A new project from Mozilla called WebGL could allow mobile sites to tap into the hardware power of OpenGL ES 2.0 enabled handsets too.

MobileCrunch reports that coders already have it up and running in the N900's web browser. There's a long way to go until rich 3D web games are feasible on smartphones, but it's an intriguing start. Check this demo video:

In fact, the whole area of playing games in your mobile browser is set to see a lot more interest in the coming months.

At its Nokia World conference this summer, Nokia showed how the N900 was able to play Flash-based Facebook games in its browser, for example.
