Wolves launch new mobile services for football fans

Texting when you're winni.... Well, texting

UK Premier League football team Wolverhampton Wanderers has launched a set of SMS-based mobile services for fans of the club.

They're using Oxygen8's mobile platform to send text alerts to fans with information about match times, travel arrangements and special offers.

"We're looking to improve our communications with supporters, and this platform allows us to improve our SMS messaging and provides us with the opportunity to communicate with our supporters in new ways," says club marketing executive Laura Price.

One thing we'd say is that for now, this is mainly a marketing initiative. We wonder if there's scope to provide more content for fans - score alerts for example, or news about the club.

However, Wolves apparently chose Oxygen8's platform because it allows new services to be launched quickly, so there's nothing to rule out those kinds of additions in the future.

Wolves' decision to use SMS at least ensures the maximum number of fans can access the services. Some clubs have recently opted to launch iPhone apps, which have a more limited market.

Now, if only the team can start winning games...
