Could open the way for adult content

Research In Motion has confirmed it's working on an age ratings system for its BlackBerry App World store, which could allow apps with adult themes or content to be distributed through the store.

“We don't have age ratings yet, but we are working feverishly to get it out there,” said Jason Laughlin, operations manager for BlackBerry App World.

“We do receive apps that walk that line of probably a 17 or 18 age rating. Right now, we would deny those apps, but we are looking to build this in in the future. So even though an app would be denied now, it's still with us. It's ready to go, but we're waiting until we have those things [age ratings] in place.”

UPDATE: RIM has clarified to ME that no final decision has been taken on implementing an age ratings system for BlackBerry App World: at this stage, it's just something that's being investigated.

Apple launched an age ratings system for iPhone's App Store earlier this year, and has since seen an explosion in 17+ applications, including games and adult apps.

It remains to be seen exactly where RIM will draw the line when it comes to the latter category, however. Some of the most popular iPhone adult apps have also been the most tacky. Asian Boobs for BlackBerry? Time will tell.
