Taking on Spotify for cross-platform streaming thrills
It's a bit rude to call Deezer 'the French Spotify', given that it launched first out of the two. Even so, it's in the same ballpark, offering ad-supported streaming music.
Now Deezer has launched a new premium service for €9.99 a month, which includes mobile as a key element, as well as a Spotify-style desktop application.
On the mobile side, there is already a Deezer app for iPhone which lets users stream internet radio stations. However, it has been updated to allow on-demand streaming for Deezer Premium customers too.
The service has a catalogue of more than 4.5 million tracks, although the Premium version is so far only available in France. There are also similar mobile apps for Android and BlackBerry.
According to TechCrunch Europe, Deezer canvassed its users before launching the new service, and found that 80% of them were keen to access it from their phones. Whether they'll stump up for the privilege will be interesting to watch.
