The research, by price comparison website www.rightmobilephone.co.uk, found that over half of those who checked had found “evidence” on their partner’s phone in the form of a text or picture. For 62 per cent of them, it lead to the break-up of their relationship.

Elsewhere, 36 per cent claimed to have cheated on a partner at some stage and a whopping 92 per cent said their mobile phone played a huge part in their affair. A physical part? The study doesn't say.

Over half of the people who admitted going through their partner’s mobile had found incriminating text messages and 28 per cent came across a fruity picture.

Seven per cent bought a second mobile phone to keep their bad behaviour under wraps, while 20 per cent saved a number in their phone under a different name.

The top five things to be suspicious about are:

1.    Texts from the opposite sex with kisses on
2.    Passwords on their inbox
3.    Passwords on their image folder
4.    Deleted sent items
5.    Unrecognised names in phonebook
