Ustream launches Android livestreaming video app

The latest way for mobile users to broadcast from their handsets

Streaming video firm Ustream has launched its official Android application, allowing users of Google-powered handsets to broadcast live video footage from their phones.

The app is due to launch today, and will compete with the Android app of rival Qik, which launched earlier this year.

The app involves shooting video, and it being broadcast live on the web - while also being saved for later viewing. However, it can also be used simply to upload existing footage that's been shot using the handset.

Ustream tells TechCrunch that it's aiming to offer less 'lag' than Qik and other competitors, which will help people using the app's chat and Twitter features to chat with viewers in real-time.

Livestreaming is a growing area, albeit still a bit of a niche. Anyone planning to make heavy use of these kinds of apps would be wise to have a decent data tariff before starting, though.
