New Sally Potter film to debut on iPhone via Babelgum app

Who needs glitzy red-carpet premieres when you've got the App Store?

Babelgum has revealed that it will showcase a new film from UK director Sally Potter via its free iPhone app later this month.

The film, Rage, will be available to watch for seven days from 21st September, with a different episode from the movie shown every day. It will be available in the US, UK, Italy, France, Germany and Spain according to Reuters.

It's not an obscure leftfield movie either: stars include Judi Dench, Steve Buscemi, Eddie Izzard and Jude Law. The film's official premiere is on 24th September in the UK.

It is early days to suggest iPhone apps will become an important new distribution channel for movies, though. Rage's Babelgum deal is more about the PR benefits of debuting on iPhone.

Even so, at a time when handset makers are again looking at distributing films to phones - witness Motorola's recent deal with Blockbuster - it's interesting to see Babelgum doing it for free.
