Top 5 handset maker shipments down 13.7% in Q2

The five biggest handset makers in the world sold 34 million fewer phones in Q2 this year than the same period a year ago

Analysis by Mobile Entertainment of figures given in the quarterly financial results of Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson reveal that together they sold 213.9 million handsets in Q2 this year.

That's down from the 247.9 million phones they sold in Q2 2008. However, the Korean manufacturers bucked the overall trend, leaving their Western rivals licking their wounds.

Nokia is still the biggest handset maker in the world, though. The company sold 103.2 million phones in Q2, down 15.4% year-on-year.

Samsung did better, though, selling 52.3 million handsets in Q2 this year, up 14.4% compared to Q2 2008.

LG also did well, selling 29.8 million handsets in Q2 this year, up just 7.6% year-on-year, but that was enough to overtake Motorola and become the third largest handset firm.

Moto, though, had a miserable time, with Q2 sales of 14.8 million handsets, down 47.3% year-on-year. Fifth-placed Sony Ericsson also saw its handset sales plummet - 43.4% to 13.8 million.
