America Movil getting widgety with Qualcomm

Latin American mobile operator America Movil has signed up to use Qualcomm's Plaza Mobile Internet widget platform

The operator will be using the platform to power its Ideas Widget service across all 18 of its subsidiaries in Latin America.

As far as we can make out, America Movil is in fact Qualcomm's first customer for Plaza - at least according to the press releases section of the official Plaza website. The platform was first unveiled in May 2008, so it's taken a while.

The technology means America Movil's users will be able to install widgets on their phones for a variety of internet services, while Qualcomm will encourage those services and other publishers to make widgets for the operator's catalogue.

"We selected Qualcomm's Plaza Mobile Internet widget solution as a user-friendly and personalised way for users to access Internet content from their mobile devices," says Marco Quatorze, head of value-added services at America Movil.

While mobile widgets were all the rage when Plaza was first announced, their thunder has since been stolen by the mania for app stores. Indeed, Qualcomm itself has announced a separate Plaza Retail white-label app store platform aimed at operators.

The America Movil deal indicates that widgets might not be yesterday's news just yet, though.
