Gracenote launches MusicID iPhone app

Gracenote is taking on Shazam with an iPhone version of its MusicID music recognition application

Like Shazam, the app lets users hold up their iPhone to identify music that's playing, before finding out related information, and tapping through to buy it (if available) from Apple's iTunes Store.

The app has actually been released by Gravity Mobile, which was acquired by Gracenote in 2008. It also lets users search for songs by lyrics and watch YouTube videos.

It calls on a database of more than 100 million tracks, which is already being accessed by more than four billion searches a month on other mobile platforms.

However, the app isn't available on the UK App Store at the time of writing - hopefully something that will be remedied soon.

Rival Shazam has enjoyed great success on the App Store, racking up more than seven million downloads, and recently relaunching with new features taking advantage of the iPhone 3.0 software.
