Augmented reality startups want iPhone to open up

More than a dozen augmented reality companies have asked Apple to open up the iPhone 3GS' live video feature for their apps

Their online petition suggests that if it doesn't, developers may look to other mobile platforms instead.

"We believe Apple has a window of opportunity of about 3 months before developers start looking elsewhere," says the petition, as reported on VentureBeat.

"If Apple decides to publish the API in that time frame – in the next 10 years, everyone might be using the iPhone as the preferred device to interact with the real world."

That in a nutshell describes what augmented reality (AR for short) is: you point your handset at something in the real-world, and an AR app then overlays graphics and interactivity onto the video feed.

There are already several examples for Android handsets, including the innovative Wikitude AR travel guide (pictured). Meanwhile, Nokia has been pushing developers to create AR games for its future smartphones.

The Hyperfactory note in this (recommended) brief on AR that the lack of iPhone SDK means you don’t see AR campaigns on iPhone. Most of the AR innovation appears to be on Android, is that what Apple wants? ...oh I’m not allowed to add a link – if you’re interested please search on “Bring your mobile campaign to life, virtually: the insider’s guide to augmented reality”

Don't you think AR will eventually be embedded and become as significant as Texting? - not sure how long it will take but it seems a no brainer.

I just have a comment regarding this statement:
"Nokia has been pushing developers to create AR games for its future smartphones"

In older Nokia phones developers could create AR apps and experiment with them. Surprisingly however, in the newer phones, namely the 5800 express music and the N97, there is no graphics hardware acceleration support, which means that any intensive 3D application including AR will have a very poor performance and quality.

So i think Nokia is falling behind in this domain and the above statement does not stand up practically unfortunately.
