Mobile apps to generate $25bn by 2014

It's all downloads now, but the future will be driven by in-app billing, says Juniper

The report concludes that additional revenues from value-added services will provide the dominant revenue stream by 2011, and noted that many Tier 1 operators would deploy their own app stores.

However, Juniper says the real benefit to operators will be derived from data revenues rather than retail.

Report author Dr Windsor Holden said: "Data revenue growth is dependent upon operators embracing policies which enable open access -- a policy which also involves facilitating app stores which compete with their on-portal offerings."

Other findings from the Juniper report are:

* Games will remain the largest category in terms of downloads and revenues
* App stores present a significant challenge to traditional content aggregators who may have to amend their business models to remain viable
