5800 trumps iPod and the rest at retail in 1Q09, according to GfK stats
Nokia says its 5800 XpressMusic is the UK's best-selling portable music player so far in 2009.
Last week the company confirmed that the touchscreen device had sold 3 million units since it was launched in November last year.
The UK claim is based on sales data from GfK for Jan-Mar 2009 in terms of both volume and value.
GfK defines a portable music player as any device that plays music and has a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Of course, the data is slightly hamstrung by the fact that unlike an iPod or other kind of dedicated MP3 player, 5800 sales are heavily influenced by operator bundles/subsidies as opposed to consumers seeking them out specifically for audio bliss.
Either way, Nokia is celebrating its UK No.1 status with a nationwide ad campaign (pictured).
