The BBC revamps mobile site

New beta homepage offers users a host of customisable options

The BBC has unveiled a beta version of its new mobile homepage, which for the first time allows users to personalise the content they view.

The site also renders dynamically to give the best viewing experience for different handsets and network conditions.

The overall feel is a lot like the full BBC website, with users able to expand/shrink tabs to achieve their ideal mix of music, news, sport, TV and radio content.

They can also localise their preferences for information such as weather forecasts, TV schedules or news stories. iPlayer is accessible via the beta site, dependent on handset type.

The revamp is part of the BBC's ongoing mobile expansion - in an interview with ME, Richard Titus, the BBC’s future media controller for audio & music and mobile, revealed that the iPhone/iPod Touch now accounts for three per cent of the traffic generated by iPlayer.

Regarding the new beta site, Titus said in a statement: “Mobile devices are even more personal to audiences than their PCs. We are delighted to present a new mobile homepage, building on work started by the BBC homepage last year, that allows them to adapt their experience of the BBC wherever they are."

ME recently sat down with Titus to discuss the BBC's overall mobile strategy - click here to read the full interview.
