Vodafone prepares for Linux app future

Operator laying the ground for Android and LiMo devices with Azingo app partnership

Vodafone has selected Azingo as a development partner for applications based on the LiMo (Linux Mobile) platform.

US-based Azingo, which along with Vodafone is a member of the LiMo Foundation, says it will help build the operator's next-gen app strategy.

Linux is very much a niche technology in mobile, with the likes of Symbian, RIM, Apple and Microsoft bossing the scene in the smartphone OS stakes.

However, the rise of LiMo and Google's Linux-based Android platform (created by the Open Handset Alliance, to which Vodafone is also a member) could change that.

Guido Arnone, Director of Terminals Technology at Vodafone, said: “We are excited to partner with Azingo to develop cutting edge applications for our mobile phones based on the LiMo platform. We’re looking forward to working with Azingo’s agile development teams to develop and deliver innovative communications solutions for our customers.”

Together with Vodafone, we’re committed to delivering a range of exciting, appealing experiences for mobile phone users.”
