New Latitude mapping app allows people to 'broadcast' their whereabouts to friends and family

Google has launched a new mobile service called Latitude, which allows people in 27 countries to automatically update chosen third parties as to their whereabouts within Google Maps.

The app is initially compatible with Symbian, Windows Mobile 4.0 and BlackBerry devices, with iPhone and Android to follow.

Privacy seems to be high on the agenda, though, with Google at pains to point out that Latitude is strictly opt-in and gives users total control of who sees their location.

Latitude also enables people to SMS, IM or call a contact from their 'map pin'.
