The first wireless electricity products are due to be unveiled at CES this week.
Reports say 'WiTricity' lighting, audio speakers and digital picture frames will be demonstrated in Las Vegas at the gadgets tradeshow.
The invention has been long-awaited by tech industries, promising to do for battery power what wi-fi and bluetooth did for internet and mobile.
Companies like PowerBeam use lasers to generate about 1.5 watts of power to an area of around 10 metres. It's enough to power a mobile.
The aim would be to create 'electricity hotspots' in public places, just like wi-fi hotspots.
