China to get 3G at last
Tim Green Jan 2 2009, 12:56pm
Chinese government approves 3G licences for both proprietary local standard and CDMA.
It confirmed that the quasi-state run operator China Mobile will be assigned a licence for the Chinese-developed TD-SCDMA standard, while China Unicom and China Telecom
will run W-CDMA and CDMA-2000 respectively. There will be further licences awarded.
The move should trigger a scramble for business among the world's mobile infrastructure firms and, in the longer term, open up mouth-watering possibilities for the content market.
