flash, handsets, hardware, java, javafx, savaje, sunJava OS weeks from launch

Sun will formally launch its JavaFX Mobile OS at Mobile World Congress in February.

The platform will give developers the opportunity to build rich Internet applications (RIAs) that run on a browser, and therefore puts Sun in a position to compete with Flash and Silverlight.

Given that the Java ME platform is already running on over two billion handsets, and that variations of Java are used to make web apps, the potential is significant. Clearly, JavaFX Mobile could give developers a chance to offer Java apps direct to consumers in the way that they can for iPhone, Blackberry or Android.

JavaFX Mobile is a part of a family of products and technologies initially developed by SavaJe Technologies, which Sun bought in 2007. JavaFX uses Linux as well as Java and it's believed that Sun will offer it as a binary OS to device manufacturers.
