Trade body 3G Americas confirms global landmark reached in December 2008.

The GSM-focused organisation, along with Informa, said the four million figure was passed thanks to soaring adoption in emerging markets such as Latin America and the Caribbean. It believes the market will hit 440 million next year, equating to 76 per cent penetration.

Meanwhile wireless broadband will also expand.

Informa estimates that there are nearly 415 million 3G subscriptions to date, with 77 per cent of the 3G market on UMTS/HSPA networks, and the remaining 95 million on CDMA EV-DO.
