BBC News is the UK's top mobile destination

Nielsen figures show the Beeb pipping Google to top spot in the mobile browsing stakes

Nielsen says BBC News is the most popular destination for mobile web users in the UK, with 1.7 million average unique visitors per month in 3Q08.

The corporation just beat Google to top spot, with BBC Weather third (1.5m), Facebook fourth (1.5m) and Windows Live/Hotmail fifth (1m).

Of the most popular mobile sites, BBC Weather (21 per cent mobile/17 per cent PC-based) Sky Sports (11/8) and Gmail (9/7) have greater reach on mobile than they do on the PC-based internet.

Moreover, Nielsen says the number of UK residents using handsets to access the internet is now at 7.3 million.

The number of people using the mobile web in the UK increased by 25 per cent in Q3 to 7.3 million.

This compares to three per cent month-on-month growth in PC-based web usage, which stands at 35.3 million.

In terms of demographics, the Nielsen research says 25 per cent of mobile internet users are aged 15-24 years, compared to 16 per cent for PC-based consumers.

Kent Ferguson, a Nielsen senior analyst, said: “The fact that almost seven and a half million Britons now access the web through their phone shows that mobile internet is fast becoming a viable way for advertisers and publishers to reach important demographic groups.”
