Lay-offs at Action Engine

Mass lay-offs suggest all is not well at on-device-portal specialist Action Engine

According to MocoNews, staff were made redundant on August 29th, and company executives are now trying to sell the company. It says leading candidates are Movius and Everypoint.

Action Engine’s speciality is on-device-portal – downloadable applications branded by operators or media brands to provide quicker and more intuitive access to online content. The concept flew high in 2005/6, but never really took off because of consumer’s unwillingness to download, and because of the rising popularity/speed of browsing. Other companies in the space, like SurfKitchen and Streamezzo, have tweaked their strategies to address this.

Action Engine’s partners had included AOL, MSNBC and Sports Illustrated. In July 2007, the company raised $20 million from investors, including Baker Capital, Northwest Venture Associates and The Spangler Group. In total, the company raised about $65 million

By - obviously - laying-off staff as well:
www.euromobilemedia.com/files/Roulph.pdf - end of May 2008 - 100 employees

Will Streamezzo's company executives now also try to sell the company? And will the famous third dog - Surfkitchen - run away with the "on-device-portal" bone?
