Music super-distribution service to go live

24-7 Entertainment is to launch what it claims is the world's first super-distribution service in two weeks.

The Danish firm has built a super-distribution function via OMA 1.0 handsets for its compatriot operator partner TDC. It will launch on September 15th.

The project will allow users of TDC’s flat rate music subscription service TDC Play to forward tracks to fellow users who can then play and download them instantly when prompted to click on a WAP link. Super-distribution will be available to TDC customers on both broadband and mobile. There are approximately 2 million tracks in the catalogue.

The news marks a return to the headlines for the concept of super-distribution, which was much talked-about in the early days of mobile music. However, the idea went off the agenda when the DRM format OMA 2.0 failed to penetrate the mass market of mobile handsets. Although OMA 1.0 is very widespread, it puts a ‘forward lock’ on the distribution of protected files. 24-7 Entertainment has clearly found a way round this. It says over 60 OMA 1.0 handsets can support its new service.

When super-distribution was first discussed it was conceived as a means to drive paid-for downloads. Obviously this service, which merely stimulates activity among existing subscribers, does not grow revenues directly. Frank Taubert, CEO of 24-7 Entertainment told ME: “This is more of a community-building idea, and will serve to further differentiate TDC as a music-oriented operator among Danish mobile users. It will also make it easier for TDC Play users to discover new music.”

Intriguingly Taubert also disclosed that 24-7 Entertainment is working on a cross operator billing platform in Denmark that would enable super-distribution between all consumers, which would permit paid-for a la carte downloads.

I will be interested in the uptake and viability of this service
and I wonder what this will do to I-tunes mobile download market. It's great that some DRM is in place and I'm intrigued by the cross operator billing platform being developed.

It seems like the business evolves all the time.

Now how do I get my music to your potential music market?
