Nokia confirms Comes With Music launch
Tim Green Sep 2 2008, 10:07am
Nokia is to launch its Comes With Music service with Carphone Warehouse in the UK.
The retailer will become the service’s exclusive UK pre-pay channel, offering the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone with a year of unlimited access to the Nokia Music Store catalogue. It’s accepting pre-orders from its website from today.
Comes With Music gives consumers 12 months of ‘free’ music and the ability to keep all downloaded tracks after the year is over. The cost of the music is rolled up within the cost of the device, which Nokia shares with the supporting record labels. So far these include Warner, Sony BMG and Universal.
The news officially launches a major new phase Nokia, accelerating the drive into services, which it began last year with Music Store, N-gage and Maps.
It also represents a dramatic new model for the beleaguered music industry.
No new information has been issued on the price of the device or whether Nokia will launched Comes With Music with operator-subsidised devices.
Tero Ojanperä, executive vice president and head of the Nokia Entertainment and Communities business said “We believe that Comes With Music will transform the way people enjoy music. With unlimited music access for a year, you can enjoy your favorite artists or delve into new genres without having to worry about individual track or album purchases.”
