Mobile and online music is getting louder in Japan, with sales leaping 128 per cent in 1H2008.
The Recording Industry of Japan (RIAJ), showed the jump in its new report. It said one-off downloads of singles, albums, and music videos totaled 20.3 million for the period, up 143 per cent in unit terms. That translated into 4.31 billion yen, or $39.5 million.
Mobile (ringtones, ringbacks and full-track downloads) hit 219.5 million units, more than double the 2007 volumes.
These gains are offsetting the inevitable fall in physical product revenues, which were 146.9 billion yen, down 6 per cent from the previous period.
