'$4.7m ringback market' to be content's top earner

Ringback tones could generate $4.7 billion by 2012, says MultiMedia Intelligence.
It described ringbacks as the ‘golden child' of the mobile content market, due to a winning combination of consumer popularity and minimal impact from piracy. Frank Dickson, chief research officer with MultiMedia Intelligence, said: "The current leading mobile premium content category of realtones is already facing challenges Consumers increasingly are able to create their own ringtones.

Overall, the researcher says the global retail market for all mobile content is projected to reach $29 billion by 2012.
