Indian wallets braced for iPhone

Local operators slap a big premium on Apple's device, which launches tomorrow.
Airtel and Vodafone are asking the equivalent of £443 (36,100 rupees) for the 16GB version of iPhone 3G and £380 (31,000 rupees) for the 8GB flavour.
By comparison in the UK O2 gives the 16GB version away free on its £75 tariff and charges £59 with a £45 tariff and £159 on its £30 and £35 tariffs.
It appears the Indian pricing schemes have been met with quite a bit of disappointment among local consumers hoping to get their hands on the device.
