Global spending on mobile messaging will reach $88 billion by 2012.
According to the ‘Global Mobile Messaging Forecast 2007 – 2012’ report from Strategy Analytics, that’s up 15 per cent from last year’s $65 billion total. It says SMS will continue to dominate but that low-cost flat-rate data plans will prompt a surge in email and instant messaging too. By 2012 mobile email will account for 20 per cent of spending.
The researcher also suggests that Western European SMS revenues are beginning to plateau due to price erosion, while North America will keep growing. It expects the latter to contribute a quarter of end-user spend on mobile messaging by 2012.
