1.28bn handset sales in 2008

Handset sales will rise by 11 per cent to hit 1.28 billion this year, says Gartner.
The analyst said global device sales reached 294.3 million in 1Q2008, and it expects second quarter sales to be around 300 million. As ever, the big quarter will be 4Q when most new products will be introduced and the gift market will boost sales.
Gartner added that Asia-Pacific will provide the biggest growth, with an expected 472.5 million unit sales in 2008, up 17.9 per cent year on year.
There’ll also be a 5.3 per cent increase in the US. Saturated Western European and Japanese markets will a decline in unit sales by 1.5 per cent and 9.1 per cent respectively.
