3G iPhone queues form in New York, God help us

The 3G iPhone queues have started, but are the individuals publicity-seekers or just sad?
According to the Geardiary blog, there are a dozen or so people waiting outside Apple’s New York store. They claim they want to break the record for the longest-duration and one couple even have their baby with them.
There’s speculation that the queuers are involved in some kind of stunt. Let’s hope so. The alternative is very very depressing.
