Reports indicate up to 50 per cent of UIQ workforce could go.

Dow Jones says UIQ Technologies is mulling whether to make 200 of its 375 employees redundant following Nokia's deal to acquire Symbian and make it available as a free open source OS.

UIQ is a Symbian-based user interface software developed by Sweden-based UIQ, which is owned by Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

Nokia's creation of the Symbian Foundation means UIQ will cease to exist as a stand alone product.

UIQ spokeswoman Carina Dietmann said talks were currently underway with unions regarding the future of the company's technology and possible lay-offs.
