Thumbplay has launched the beta version of an SMS-based search app called Thumbplay GET.
The service allows mobile users in the US to instantly search for and purchase ringtones, games, videos and wallpapers when they send a text message with the word "Get" plus any artist or song name to THUMB 84862. They receive back a WAP link to a menu they can browse without commitment.
Are Traasdahl, CEO and founder of Thumbplay, said: ”With GET, we’ve made it simple for consumers to find and purchase their favorite mobile content whenever and wherever they are – even if they’re not near a computer.”
Thumbplay’s catalogue currently includes more than 80,000 pieces of licensed audio, video and gaming content.

The Thumbplay launch makes the ability to offer mobile search as a service "table stakes" for companies that sell content. Makes business sense since users can't buy what they cannot find - and fits in with a wider trend to vertical search on mobile. I cover Thumbplay and a slew of other companies entering this space (abphone, Veveo etc...) at my site msearchgroove.
