Looking ahead to iPhone 3.0

Despite the fact the new iPhone will be free on O2, there might be good reason to hold on for a while longer

The iPhone 2.0 looks great, and the pleasingly low price means that a whole new generation of Apple lovers are about to be born. But what of the features left out of the brand new device? What should we expect to be included in the inevitable iPhone 3.0, which will more likely than not be announced this time next year?

The most obvious omission from the new device is a decent camera – surprising considering that a better camera was named as one of the most wanted features in the new device pre-announcement.

2MP is simply nowhere near competitive in today’s mobile landscape. Rivals such as Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson all favour 5MP cameras in their newer devices, and even their mid-range offerings rarely venture lower than 3.2MP. iPhone 2.0’s 2MP snapper is a real surprise, and most likely the first feature that will be overhauled with the next model.

There’s also the lack of a front-facing camera to consider. Admittedly, 3G is more often used for high-speed data access than video calling, but seeing as the iPhone 2.0 is 3G enabled, it could be seen as an odd omission.

However, could it be that Apple is saving such a feature until it’s able to integrate new functionality such as gesture control in its next device? It’s exactly the sort of thing Steve Jobs’ firm could be eying up as the next big software evolution for the device, and if done right could also be the step to yet again redefine the mobile landscape.

On top of these things, Apple is yet to confirm other basic features for the new model such as copy and paste, MMS messaging and, most importantly, video recording.

And with slide-out QWERTY keyboards appearing on devices such as the HTC Diamond Pro and Sony Ericsson X1, could Apple yet consider such a feature for its next machine – maybe via a two-model strategy?

And another thing!

What about OTA iTunes downloads?? It doesn't make sense that they're saying you can now download 10MB files from the App Store over a 3G network, but full-track iTunes downloads are still a no no.

Record labels kicked up a fuss maybe?

If you think about about, Apple made it's big splash 12 months ago with the iPhone form-factor and UI. Now all the other manufacturers are doing the same kind of thing, and they all know mobile far better than APple does. As i see it, the biggest problem Apple has with iPhone going forward is continuing to look innovative. 3G? That's been a bog standard for 3 years now.

Camera and Gestures

Yes, the camera is rubbish - I mean people felt let down when the 1st iPhone came out. It's just a joke now, 2MP and no flash - whatever were they thinking? No excuse.
Gesture recognition is definitely a Nokia innovation, that Nokia will be including in their handsets, this is not something that Apple will be leading the way on...

Where does all this leave ipod touch? A lot of people were expecting a revamp of that. It's a bit in limbo now isn't it?

flash? The battery life is crap already, last thing you need is a flash. Copy and paste should be seen as a bug fix not an upgrade it's rediculous, I still havnt got rid of my berry and it may be a while

Well,

I agree about that the iPhone 3.0 is likely to come out excactly a year later. The mobile phone market is a quick one, to they have to keep up...

The camera is a size design problem like the battery life with 3G chips. Thats why there hasnt been any 3G in the first version and no better camera in the new one. Also typical apple buyers dont think of a mobile phone camera as a CAMERA. It's a toy. So i think the camera is doing his job. Maybe we get more pixels, but i would guess a flash as a no go.

But Flash for Safari would be nice. A processor update is likely for next year i'd say. A front camera and iChat. Which could also mean Apple is entering the mobil market with its own "skype" concept. Good reason that we havent seen iChat on the 3G. If you want to do that you have to be careful. iChat calls over voip (Wlan and 3G, 4G) to any phones and special prices. I think Tmobile and the others would love that...
And I personally would love the next iPhone called iPhone Sun and they build in this solar panel under the screen and beat everyone else in batterylife. : )

I think the size will more or less stay like that. at least the screen, even though more pixels could be possible. Imagine 300 ppi. The programmers need an consistent piece of hardware to trust in. Appstore is a good reason to use an iPhone. So i would say no change there.

I give video a yes, MMS or a qwerty keyboard a 100% no.

Who wants the last two feature never had an iPhone.

Copy/Paste already comes with 2.1 firmware update in Autumn.

Thats it.

This is there second mobile device. It is highly unlikely they would unleash all these "demands" on their first 2 devices. Otherwise what features would they have to put forward on further devices. Come on people think logically. Apple is a very innovative and well established in the marketing field. I think its fair to say apple most defiantly no what their doing.

yeah with the 10MB thing, why the hell are we paying for unlimited Data if we can't download anything over the network. Even with the new iTunes podcast feature if it's not under 10 you can't download it. I jailbroke mine, so I tether it to my computer so I use like 1 GB a month to punish apple for being such a douche.

AndyV,
I agree with you on most parts, but MMS is something that I'd really like to see on iphone, including text forwarding. Even though we can still view it on wifi but AT&T site has been so unpredictable that it's almost not happening.
I'd also like to be able to insert a picture, link a YouTube or weblink in an email string. I usually end up starting a new string to add a relevent image/link which not only annoying to me but also to recepients.
Thanks,
These are the features we shouldn't have to Waite for because pretty much any lousy phone can allow us do that. iPhone apps are probably the best thing happened to mobile phones but check out some of the features Sprint is offering over 3G live tv, shows and etc. I don't understand Apple/At&t's reluctance in providing such offers.

Figured out

I have already figured apple out. Apple adds one new feature to there device each year. They go with whats most popular too. Last year it was the 3rd party apps cuz everyone wanted those. Apple made a lot of money by adding just that, oh and 3G but that was a necessity. For 2009, Apple will add one more feature that people really want. They will keep doing this for as long as they want. This keeps people coming back every year to get the new iphone because think about it, if apple put all of the cool things into there phone for 2008, wat would they release for 2009. The iphone would already have everything. Apple is very smart wen it comes to makin money.

People have to realize the restrictions ATT has placed on Apple. like saying "i DL 1gb a month to punish Apple is ridiculous". Such narrow minds, as if they them selves could have come up with a better concept. The iPhone was never meant to be perfect, thus a future market.

I think apple should add bluetooth file transfer to iphone, so you can sync all your music wirelessly. And also mms and video record would be good

I agree completely with Anton,

For the record I have an iphone,

It’s a fact that it’s possible to have all the bells and whistles we would love to utilise on our mobile device. Apple is as clever with their invention as they are at making money! Apple must think we are all a bunch of idiots. But it’s strictly business to them. It’s a shame but if we want to stick with the iphone we are going to have to be patient each year for their lame upgrades, and put up with their big announcements that should be deemed as petty bug fixes…

Nothing about OS 3.0 excites me… what copy and paste? Should have been there from the start!

I say ‘ good on you’ to all the other mobile companies, out shining apple for a change!

Gareth obviously doesn't remember how cutting edge the iPhone was when it first came out, and still is. Cut and paste was an issue because of the touch interface. My iPhone camera still beats the crap out my husbands mobile camera. (Our digital camera still beats the crap out of any mobile phone camera.) It's a non-issue, but would be a bonus on a new model. I think the biggest point here, though, is the 3.0 upgrade isn't for hardware. It's for software. That's the frickin point. You get a brand new updated phone without having to buy a brand new phone. Hello people! Remember the reason it's so innovative? I think Apple got the most important things right the first time - phone, Internet, email, iPod, durable touch screen. Now they're tweaking them. And it doesn't cost a thing. So all the peeps who bought an iPhone for some reason, to try to look cool, probably, not appreciating it's functionality and understanding it's limitations, QUIT COMPLAINING. Apple is way smarter than you are! Just update the free update while it comes and watch your friends drop $300 for THE new advanced phone, still less advanced than yours. And more $ for the next new iPod. BTW... never be under the false impression that the iPhone isn't smart enough to run Flash. It's the other way around. Flash isn't smart enough to run on the iPhone. I wonder when their developers are planning on getting with the program...

I agree with Renee 100%. If you didn't like what the iPhone had to offer, why the hell would you go out and buy it? I knew full well what I didn't like about it, but I bought it anyway, (mms, video recording, FF camera), and I had the good faith that Apple would come through. (Which, by the way, they always do). Now the update's about to come out, who really cares what it has to offer? As long as there is some sort of software update, (which is free), you're improving. If it sucks that bad, move on, get a freakin LG dare or something, and quit complaining. Pay for the hardware update every how many months, and let us sit and home and upgrade out phones for free.

It is so interesting to see everyone frustrated over something so plain and easy to assess. I have an iPhone 3G and I have loved it since the day it came out. I think that even though it doesn't have those other little quirks like cut n' paste, video recording- it is an overall amazing mobile device. I have a couple friends who went and got an LG Voyager and the Samsung Behold (which btw, comes with a 5.0MP camera and STILL takes crappy pics compared to my iPhone) and even they have finally succumbed and admitted that even without my MMS and other stuff, they feel my iPhone dominates. Megapixels are not everything. You can have high MP and a crappy lens or a crappy processor and your photos will be crap. Salespeople make people think that just because it has more MP, its better...Lies!

Hands down, even with the missing features, the iPhone is better, people just like to complain and are never satisfied.

dissapointing upgrade

The 3.0 firmware upgrade is nothing short of a collection of bug fixes that should have been rectified soon after the launch. Im not going to complain too much about that as i knew what i was getting when i got the phone and to be fair i have had a fairly good year from the device.
My real disapointment is with the upcoming 3GS, it seems to fail to meet the standards that are being set by the competition.
I was hoping to see the screen bumped to VGA 640x480 at a minimum. The camera, which i use a fair bit is average and lacks a flash. And speaking of lacking flash what about incorporating flash into safari as im tired of the WinMo fans at work showing off flash content on their devices.
Im hoping the battery life will be a vast improvemnt but untill i see benchmarks im holding judgement.
I may sound negative, and to be honest i would be very happy with the new iphone if it where not priced so high. The are charging a premium rate price for a phone that is average compared to the competition.
I will have to make the tough choice between upgrading to the iphone or moving to the HTC Magic (android) or dare i say it the HD (it does have a lovely screen, but winmo sux)
