BREW 08: Qualcomm positions itself as operator-friendly

Internet services giant says Nokia Ovi-style offerings not on its agenda.
Qualcomm says the ongoing extension of its mobile content services offering will be focused on 'sitting behind' mobile operators, rather than competing with them.
In a roundtable at BREW 08 this morning, Andrew Gilbert, EVP and president of Qualcomm Internet Services, stressed that his company was an 'operator friendly' service provider.
He was referring specifically to Qualcomm's expanding BREW download ecosystem, MediaFLO mobile TV platform and emerging areas like m-commerce, recommendation and geo-tagging.
Gilbert argued that there is a difference between Qualcomm's approach and that of Nokia, whose move into direct-to-consumer mobile content services through Ovi has met with some resistance from operators eager to protect their own offerings.
"There are clearly other mobile content delivery providers out there, but Qualcomm has a lot to offer operators who wish to take a different path," said Gilbert.
