Phone settings on demand - for a pound

WDS Global has launched a site that sends configuration settings to UK consumers for a £1 charge.
The ConfigureMyPhone site was conceived in response to the growing despair of content providers, frustrated at the number of consumers who need help with their phone’s data settings. WDS says 20 per cent of users fail an internet connection because of configuration errors. It reckons it can cost up to £10,000 a month for a content provider to provide and send these settings to end-users – clearly, a prohibitive cost.
Now, they can link their sites to the ConfigureMyPhone D2C site, from where consumers can select their device and the setting needed (browser, mail, MMS, java) for the cost of a £1 reverse charged SMS.
The service is live now in the UK. WDS said it aims to roll out ConfigureMyPhone to other regions later this year. In Q3 it will release an API to let content providers host the service from within their own sites.
Tim Deluca Smith, VP of marketing at WDS Golbal, said: “It’s obvious what a major obstacle configuration settings still are. We wanted to provide a compelling roadmap for content providers to provide these settings while taking costs to near zero.”
WDS Global is a provider of OTA configuration services that already performs more than 100 million configurations for operator and handset manufacturer customers.
