Opera: mobile web is the social web

Traffic to social networks comprises almost 40 per cent of the mobile web, says Opera Software.

Its ‘State of the Mobile Web’ report reveals that, in some countries such as the US, South Africa and Indonesia, the rate can reach over 60 per cent.

Opera says 44 million cumulative users have tried Opera Mini, and that full web surfing comprises more than 77 per cent of all traffic. WAP percentages have declined as more consumers realise Opera Mini can access rich web content.

"The mobile web is also the social web," said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera. "With social networks dominating Opera Mini's traffic, it is clear that people use their mobile browser as yet another communication tool on their phone. I find it reassuring to see that there is decreasing distinction between the types of web content people use on the mobile device."
