Data usage and iPhone drive Telefonica

Telefonica's non-SMS mobile data revenue up 40.6 per cent in 1Q08 while iPhone drives O2 UK.
Total mobile data revenues across the group amounted to 903 million euros in 1Q08, with non-SMS data revenue of 205 million euros, up 40.6 per cent year on year.
In the UK, Telefonica subsidiary O2 reaped the rewards from Apple's iPhone, saying the device was primarily responsible for a 2.5x increase in new contract customer additions in Q1.
O2 UK's data ARPU came in at 10.7 euros, up 9.6 per cent on 1Q07, based on increased message volumes (up 30.5 per cent YoY) and increased usage of mobile internet and the O2 Active portal.
Non-SMS data at O2 grew 55.7 per cent.
Telefonica's pan-European customer base now stands at 42.8 million (up 8.8 per cent year on year), with almost 3.5 million customers added in Q1.
