handset, hardware296m phones shipped in 1Q

More than 296 million handset were shipped in the first quarter of 2008, says iSuppli.

That’s a rise of 17 per cent from 253 million in 1Q 2007, but a fall of 12.4 per cent (from 338 million) on the bumper fourth quarter of 2007.

Nokia easily maintained its first place finish, shipping 115.5 million units to give it a market share of 39 per cent. Samsung beat Motorola in total shipments to bag second spot with a market share of 15.6 per cent, up from 13.7 per cent in Q4 2007. It was strongest in the emerging markets, particularly China and India.

Motorola controlled 9.3 per cent, LG Electronics got 8.3 per cent while Sony Ericsson fell from its number four spot in Q4 to grab 7.5 per cent of shipments.

Outside of this quintet China’s Huawei and ZTE are making a name for themselves. ZTE said first quarter shipments of its GSM products doubled year on year and its equipment is deployed by more than 60 operators in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Apple’s share actually fell for the first time, from 0.7 per cent in Q4 to 0.6 per cent in Q1. The company shipped 1.7 million iPhones worldwide in Q1 of this year, down from 2.3 million in Q4.
