iSuppli says global device shipments reached 269m units.

That's up 17 per cent on 253m units in 1Q07, which research outfit iSuppli says shows the mobile industry has been resistant to the economic slowdown in North America and parts of Europe.

Shipments were down 12.4 per cent compared to 338 million in the fourth quarter of 2007, but iSuppli attributes the decline to normal seasonality.

According to the figures, Nokia increased its global shipments by 26.8 per cent in Q1 to 115.5 million units, for a market share of 26.8 per cent.

However, the Finnish company's shipments in North America declined to what iSuppli calls a 'historical low' of 2.6 million units - 49 per cent down on 4Q07.

Samsung stayed as the second-largest handset company during the quarter, with its global share of shipments up at 15.6 per cent compared to 13.7 per cent in 4Q07.

Sony Ericsson was the big loser of the quarter, slipping to fifth with a share of 7.5 per cent, with LG taking fourth with 8.2 per cent of shipments.

Motorola's free fall continues - it maintained its number three market position, but its global share fell from 21.1 per cent in 4Q07 to 9.3 per cent in 1Q08.
