Handheld's popularity shows no sign of slowing; system now has 57 million-selling games.
Nintendo has reported that sales of its wi-fi enabled Nintendo DS console have hit 70.6 million units worldwide as part of its end-of-year fiscal results.
It sold 30.31 million units – over a third - during its FY 2007-2008, which ended on March 31st.
The FY result is up 7.1 per cent on the total in 2006-2007, when the firm reported 23.56 million sales.
This year’s DS sales exceeded Nintendo’s expectations as the company reaps the rewards of the casual gaming boom. Many mobile games publishers, like Gameloft, are also beginning to target the platform.
The platform holder also revealed that there are now 57 DS games with over 1 million sales, including Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Brain Age 1 and 2, Nintendogs and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
The figure has grown from the 30 reported in its previous financial year. Earlier, ME sister magazine MCV reported that Nintendo's FY operating profit had doubled year-on-year - with net profit up 47.7 per cent.
