GSM connections have now passed the 3 billion mark, says the GSMA.
The landmark has been reached just four years after the GSM industry surpassed its first billion, and just two years from the second billionth connection. The first GSM network launched in 1991.
Unsurprisingly the growth is being powered by the BRIC quartet: China (with 509 million subs), which is adds over 7 million new connections a month; India (193 million), with 6 million new subs per month, Russia (178 million) and Brazil (93 million).
Today more than 700 mobile operators across 218 countries and territories of the world are adding new connections at the rate of 15 per second, or 1.3 million per day.
