Openbit prepares content payments rollout

On-device payments provider ready for wider rollout following Nokia Maps success.
Finland-based Openbit is preparing to offer its mobile payments and DRM platform to the wider content business, having successfully deployed it as part of Nokia’s location service Nokia Maps.
Anyone downloading a premium map from a Nokia device is taken through the process with Openbit software, which presents billing options, takes payment details and attaches the appropriate license to the content.
Openbit says the USP of the solution is its intuitive two-click user experience and the fact that consumers that buy content sold using the system can transfer it between different handsets with ease.
“Unlike most other systems out there, our DRM solution keeps tabs not just on the customer’s handset but also their SIM – this means we can track users across the devices they are using,” said Vesa-Pekka Kirsi, Openbit’s vice president of sales.
The system works by allowing users to first trial content for free, after which they are asked to buy it by accepting the charge on either their credit card or phone bill.
