Italian D2C giant targets '$2.6bn' Indian mobile content market with new portal.

The Blinko Gold portal will offer the usual mix of downloadable content as Buongiorno continues to expand its presence in emerging markets.

The company cites improved regulatory structures combined with declining tariffs, innovative pre-paid tariff plans and cheaper handsets as reasons to be cheerful about getting into India.

Buongiorno says VAS services generate seven per cent of revenue for Indian operators, with that figure expected to rise to 12 per cent in 2010 - a figure it says represents a market value of $2,744 million.

Buongiorno’s Indian operations are based in New Delhi with 75 employees.

It already provides white label mobile content services for the likes of The Times of India, MTV, Samsung and Sony BMG.

Andrea Casalini, CEO of Buongiorno, said: "As is the case with entering into emerging markets, we have had to overcome a number of challenges including managing and aggregating a completely local content catalogue for the service provisioning - more than 95 per cent of the content is local Indian content. With fantastic partnerships already in place, we are confident the Blinko Gold brand will help us capitalise on this significant opportunity."
