Version 6.1 of the OS comes with new Internet Explorer Mobile browser.
Updates and new phones are expected to be available beginning in the second quarter of 2008.
IE Mobile will be available to Windows Mobile handset partners in the third quarter of 2008, with the first devices using the new version to be available by the end of the year.
It looks like Microsoft has invested a lot of time improving the Windows Mobile user experience, which in the past has been criticised for being a bit clunky.
The update includes a new sliding panel homescreen and what Mcrosoft calls 'enhanced features for socialising', like threaded text messaging and simpler navigation.
