Buongiorno’s Bing social networking service is attracting over 20 million messages a week.
The D2C specialist rolled out the service to 11 countries since testing in South Africa and Austria last June 2007. The application provides aspects of SMS and IM in a Java environment that allows for mobile chat that is entirely free of charge. It is operator and handset agnostic. Users can communicate with as many friends as they like at the same time.
Bing is now available in the test countries plus UK, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and Vietnam. It has attracted over 1.2 million logins.
Buongiorno will now invest €10m in the next version of the app.
Fernando González Mesones, head of global marketing, product and supply at Buongiorno, commented: “It is important for Buongiorno to capture value generating developments in the industry, and the enormous popularity of social networking obviously represents a huge opportunity for us. It is our goal to become one of the most recognised global brands in mobile social networking.”

20 messages/wk is not bad..
Nice-- but, i think creating an open social app for buongiorno and making it available to bigger established social network is a lot easier to manage..than deploying one from scratch.. Might also gain more traction..
Of course they can cross sell in their app their bread and butter services of ringtones and wallpapers.
But thats just me--
