Volantis has taken its ‘intelligent content delivery software’ into the open source market.

It today released its Mobility Server to the open source community – offering 1.2 million lines of code developed over seven years. The company also launched the Mobility Server Project to help developers build out the mobile platform.

Volantis’s various platforms makes it cheaper and quicker for for companies to create mobile content and distribute it to the 5,000 devices on the market. It’s currently delivering content to more than 350 million mobile users worldwide,

Volantis claims to be the first mobile content delivery solutions vendor to go open source with its code. It’s doing to in order to target the enterprise market, and hopes to drive mobile Web adoption.

“The Internet grew, in large part, because it was easy to develop for the Web. Not only were browsers relatively standardised, but the tools to create databases and complex systems are open and available,” said Volantis CEO Mark Watson. “Our goal is to bring that same openness to the mobile Web. Developing for this market is difficult thanks to the splintered phone market, which will only continue to diversify. Developers need an easy-to-use tool with a proven device library in order to help their creativity come alive.”
