Eighty-five per cent of iPhone users browse the mobile web, according to M:Metrics.

Other iPhone-tastic stats to emerge from the M:Metrics study of January usage include 30.9 per cent of owners watching mobile TV or video, compared to a 4.6 per cent market average and more than double the rate for all smartphone users.

Usage of social networking is also popular among iPhone users: 49.7 per cent accessed a social networking site in January, nearly twelve times the market average.

More specifically, 20 per cent of iPhone users accessed Facebook, one of the first web properties to customise its content for the device, compared to 1.5 per cent of the total mobile market.

Seventy-four per cent of iPhone owners listened to music in January, compared to 6.7 per cent of the total mobile audience.

Eighty four per cent of iPhone owners who use an MP3 player use an iPod.

In terms of demographics, iPhone users are more likely to be male, aged 25-34, earn more that $100,000 and have a college degree.

Mark Donovan, senior analyst at M:Metrics, said: "The iPhone has certainly delivered on its hype. Beyond a doubt, this device is compelling consumers to interact with the mobile web, delivering off-the-charts usage from everything to text messaging to mobile video."
