Blyk confirms Netherlands launch

Ad-funded MVNO to launch Dutch operation, secures new investment

Blyk will piggyback the Vodafone Netherlands network and says it will go live at an as yet unspecified date in the second half of this year.

Finland-based Blyk has also announced new investors Goldman Sachs and Industrial and Financial Investments Company (IFIC), who join a roster that includes Sofinnova Partners and a number of private investors.

Blyk was launched in the UK last September (where it piggybacks the Orange network). It targets 16-24 year olds, offering an allowance of free voice and texts each month voice as long as they opt in to receive up to six ads to their phone a day.

Last week ME revealed that the UK service has amassed 30,000 subscribers, and is gathering 3,000 more every week. It remains on target for 50,000 subs by March and 100,000 by the end of the year.

Blyk’s CEO and Co-founder, Pekka Ala-Pietilä, said: "For advertisers Blyk is a pan-European youth medium and the Netherlands is among the three highest advertising spend per capita in Europe. It is also a key target market for those brands with international campaigns."
